I am here today to talk about a person that I am really a big fan of and that I had the opportunity to play her in a photoshoot. Her name is Frida Kahlo. Do you know her?
She is a very famous Mexican painter who was married to Diego Rivera. She was a Communist and mainly she is known for her disability, many operations and chronic pain like me.
I was lucky to go to Mexico a few years ago and went to visit her house and see her clothes, and to be surrounded by all her stuff. What I liked most was her bed that has a mirror on the top from where she painted portraits of herself. She used a lot of colours in her work and she is remembered for her monobrow and flowers in her hair. There is a film on Netflix about her and I highly that recommend you watch it.
Over the summer in England, Frida is being celebrated in exhibitions. I took a picture in the street in Chelsea in front of a large mural of her with real flowers in her hair… AMAZING Also I was asked to play her for an exhibition that will be on from 22 August to 6 September in London. I will leave the details at the bottom of the blog. So what was it? A friend of mine, photographer Anila Hussain, invited me to play Frida for a photography exhibition. I accepted instantly. She said we are much like each other and I would represent Frida very well in this exhibition called ‘ALL CAN BE FRIDA’. So we prepared for more than 2 days… flowers, clothes, colours, makeup, hair. It was a big job for 10 minutes of photography.
And the result is here.
I also made a vlog of my day being Frida and I will also leave the link here. I was out of my comfort zone but I was so honoured and proud to do it. The photographer had special advice for me to connect with my pain while she was taking the pictures, so I thought about all challenges and physical pain I go through.
I just hope you can go to the exhibition and see the results for yourself. Just to bring awareness about Frida is already good enough but to be in an exhibition being her is the icing on the cake!
